Activities
The support of international young leadership and cross-border dialogue are the current core themes of the Tönissteiner program work.
International young leadership
At the time of establishment the aim was to set up a network that would prepare qualified young people to take on international leadership roles. Young graduates with experience abroad were voted into the group and supported by the network of older members.
Since 2000 a range of further programs for the external support of young leaders was developed:
- The East Initiative opens the Tönissteiner Group to internationally-oriented and trained young leaders from the New states of Germany.
- Tönissteiner act as mentors and advisors for young, internationally-oriented leaders.
- The Berliner Initiative focussed on an improvement of the circumstances facing young leaders during university and when entering the job market.
- The Student Forum offers higly qualified students from all fields contact with international issues and prepares them for leadership roles.
Crossborder dialogue
Tönissteiner support the vision of a united Europe. Central themes of the political exchange are the Franco-German friendship and the transatlantic partnership.
New emphasis is put on the exchange with our central and south East European neighbours whose integration in the EU offers a historical oportunity for a peaceful future for Europa. The group supports the development of civil society and cross-border networks in the new EU member countries, so far in Poland (Young Polish International Network) und in Croatia (European Cercle Croatia).
